Remote Learning: Incorporating Real-World Problems

The quick shift to emergency remote learning has put a lot of pressure on having a successful class session. We learned from experience that digital tools, tech equipment, and online learning platforms will not always work for individuals. To help ease the amount of pressure for a successful remote learning experience, assign activities that encourage students to solve problems independently using real-world problems.

Here are 4 examples to motivate your students to learn on their own, and think outside the box.

1. Project-based activities – The power of learning is in the action of doing the activity. Posters are nice but encouraging students to use materials found at home can take projects to the next level.LEGO bricks, tape, boxes, paper, food, and glue are great starters for elementary students. With adult supervision, 6-12th can upgrade their projects using tools, wood, hot glue gun,Soldering Iron, andCircuit Kits.

2. Reflection/Journals  – There are many factors and challenges students may face at home during the pandemic, having a variety of reflection methods incorporated into the lesson will assist students to articulate their thoughts and emotions. For project-based activities, a photograph, video, or slide show presentation is a unique way for students to showcase their work. Here are a few methods to get you started “What are Some Strategies for Reflection Activities,” from the Center for Teaching and Learning.

3. Syllabus/Rubric– Prior to the start of the class, give each student a rubric or syllabus to follow. The guide will help parents and students understand the assignments, deadlines, and details of how their work will be assessed.

4. Case Studies/Articles – Incorporate real-world examples of global challenges, and how people are working together to find solutions. Topics such as climate change, health care, education, violence, food insecurity are all topics of interest affecting us today. Encourage students to think about how they might solve the problem either by making a video project or a slide show presentation.
